This is a unique opportunity to step into a role that directly influences our environmental impact and how our teams work, grow and keep each other safe every single day.
At The a2 Milk Company, we are building a culture where people and safety come first. As we continue to expand, we are looking for a Safety and Environment Manager who can bring passion, collaboration and expert capability to our manufacturing site.
Reporting to the Plant Manager, with a dotted line to our Group Head of Safety and Group Head of Sustainability, the Safety & Environment Manager will lead the development and implementation of HSE programs across our Smeaton Grange facility.
What You’ll Be Doing
In this hands-on role, you will embed a safety-first culture, strengthen our environmental performance, and partner closely with operations, engineering and maintenance teams to drive meaningful, sustainable outcomes.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a manufacturing environment, is onsite building strong relationships at all levels while bringing our team members along the safety and environment focused journey through great communication, coaching and collaboration.
What your week could look like;
Safety Leadership
- Champion a safety-first mindset across the site, building ownership and accountability at every level.
- Lead and embed our safety systems, reporting processes, SOPs, and risk registers.
- Conduct risk assessments and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Deliver safety training and develop capability across the teams.
- Strengthen and support the site safety committee and partner with Engineering on CAPEX projects.
Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives
- Implement environmental management systems aligned with ISO 14001.
- Ensure compliance with legislation, licence conditions and internal standards relating to trade waste, water, emissions, energy and waste.
- Lead initiatives to reduce waste, improve recycling and drive better resource efficiency.
- Monitor and report environmental metrics and champion site-wide awareness.
Continuous Improvement
- Lead investigations to identify root causes of safety and environmental issues.
- Deliver improvement projects that enhance risk reduction and sustainability performance.
- Be an active member of the site leadership team, shaping operational excellence.
About You
Bring your experience below into a role where you are recognised and rewarded:
- 5+ Years experience leading safety and environmental programs in a manufacturing environment (FMCG experience will be highly valued)
- A degree or equivalent experience in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Environmental Management or related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of WHS and environmental legislation.
- Experience developing and implementing safety and environmental management systems (ISO 14001 preferred).
- Outstanding communication, collaboration and influencing skills with the ability to coach, guide and bring people on the safety journey.
- A proactive, hands-on, problem-solving mindset.
- Strong stakeholder management and the ability to lead through engagement, not enforcement.
